While Labor put pressure on the Turnbull Government to act immediately in response to the more than 20 deaths, with 1 in Australia, at the hands of Takata airbags, the Government dithered and delayed for more than 6 months before announcing a compulsory recall.
Now there are 1.8 million deadly Takata airbags that still need replacing as part of the compulsory recall that will run until 2020.
The ACCC have released comprehensive data this morning detailing recall rates for the dangerous airbags around the country.
The “alpha” Takata airbags were found to have a failure rate of 1 in 2, and can turn a minor accident into a major accident.
These alpha airbags are ticking time-bombs.
Labor notes the progress made by various vehicle manufacturers in removing the faulty airbags from Australian cars, as well as the ACCC for their oversight.
The Minister’s delay to act to introduce a compulsory recall on these death-traps is just another example of the Turnbull Government’s ambivalence to Australian consumers.
