SUICIDE PREVENTION TRIAL SITE NEEDS MORE TIME

12 December 2017

Local Member of Federal Parliament, Madeleine King MP, is calling on the Turnbull Government to consider providing an extension of time to the Perth South suicide prevention trial site.

“An extension of the trial site will not only ensure there is enough time for the necessary work to be undertaken, it will also provide an opportunity for meaningful data to be gathered, enhancing the evaluation process,” Ms King said.

Ms King has written to the Minister for Health calling on the Turnbull Government to consider extending all 12 of the suicide prevention trial sites across Australia.

“Labor acknowledges the work the Primary Health Network (PHN) and advisory group are undertaking in relation to this most important work,” Ms King said.

“Their knowledge and expertise are vital to ensure the Perth South suicide prevention trial site has a strong focus on their local community.

“However, after more than a year into the three year trial, Labor is concerned there will not be adequate time to gather the data required to get this policy right.

“Extending the time makes a great deal of sense not only from an evaluation perspective but it also ensures the advisory group and PHN have enough time to carry out all of the vital work they need to do to ensure the necessary on-ground activities are commissioned at a local level.”

The latest statistics from the ABS revealed 2866 Australians died by suicide last year. These statistics are heartbreaking and confronting.

“With an average of around eight deaths by suicide in Australia each day it cannot be underestimated how much the work undertaken across this trial site will make a difference to the lives of many vulnerable West Australians,” Ms King said.

“Labor is prepared to work with Government on this important issue and we welcomed the Turnbull Government adopting our 2016 election commitment to roll out 12 suicide prevention trial across the country.”

Perth South is one of 12 suicide prevention trial sites around Australia.
