Madeleine King, Federal Member for Brand and the Federal Resources Minister and Minister for Northern Australia, welcomed the result of ABC Radio Perth Breakfast’s competition to find the best beach in Perth.

Minister King also thanked ABC Breakfast host Mark Gibson for running the competition,

Minister King said the conclusive result confirmed what everybody living in Rockingham had long known - that their beach was by far and away the best in Perth, and probably the best in Western Australia.

“Residents of Rockingham can be very proud of the fact they have the best beach in Perth,” Minister King said.

“Rockingham beach has miles of pure white sand, beautiful, calm turquoise waters and a green and welcoming foreshore perfect for a spending time with family and friends.”

Rockingham was among an initial cohort of ten beaches selected by Gibson for the competition.

That group was whittled down to a final group of five: Leighton, Scarborough, Pinky’s on Rottnest Island, Cottesloe and Rockingham.

Rockingham ultimately won with a stunning 69 per cent of ABC listeners voting the beach as the best in Perth.

Minister King said it was particularly satisfying to see Rockingham edge out beaches such as Cottesloe, which was often promoted as the State’s best.

“The people have spoken. They know Rockingham beats Cottesloe any day of the week,” Minister King said.

“Why would you go to Cottesloe, where the coffee is overpriced and well-heeled locals are less than welcoming,” Minister King said.

Minister King said Rockingham Beach plays an important role in the community, hosting and welcoming visitors from everywhere so that locals can keep the even more remarkable beauty of Shoalwater Bay, Warnbro, Secret Harbour and Golden Bay beaches a secret.

Rockingham residents have been quick to back in the result.

On social media, locals said they always knew Rockingham was the best beach, as the ocean was calm and protected, the sand was soft, and the grassed area perfect for an ant and sand free picnic.

Minister King paid tribute to the work of City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin in promoting Rockingham beach as the best in Perth.

“Rockingham would clearly be a frontrunner for best beach in any statewide, or even nationwide competition, Minister King said.
