Mardi Johnston is one of many carers who are lining up questions for the new National Disability Insurance Agency when it conducts an information session at the Gary Holland Centre on Tuesday 31 July.

Her principle concern relates to the requirements of changing over from a state-based to a nationally-based system.

Her 43 year-old sister Rebecca Johnston was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby and the changeover has meant Mardi has to convince, with medical evidence, a new agency about her sister’s greater needs as the illness progresses.

“Unfortunately the need to explain Rebecca’s worsening condition is time-consuming and quite insulting,” said Mardi. “There is no form provided to follow a clear set of requirements.”

Mardi took on the caring responsibilities nearly three years ago after her father suffered two heart attacks and was diagnosed with Alzheimers.

Rebecca also suffers from intellectual disabilities.

Madeleine King, the federal member representing Rockingham and Kwinana, said it was unfortunate that WA was late in joining the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

“The delay has exacerbated the concerns of people like Mardi Johnston and I am hopeful that the information session at Gary Holland Centre will answer the many questions people have raised with me.”

The information session will start at 10am on 31 July at Gary Holland Centre, 19 Kent Street, Rockingham.
