Australia Post has slashed postal services to 18 suburbs across the Brand electorate.

Australia Post has slashed postal services to 18 suburbs across the Brand electorate.

People in Rockingham, Kwinana and surrounding areas are seeing the end of daily letter deliveries and slower delivery times because of the Morrison Government’s cuts to Australia Post.

My office has been informed by Australia Post that six postcodes (6167, 6168, 6169, 6170, 6171, 6172 and 6173) have been affected, and that the changes have been rolled out over the past few weeks.

Labor opposed these cuts during the most recent parliamentary sittings, but the Liberals and Nationals voted to lock in the cuts.

We believe the Morrison Government is using the COVID-19 pandemic as a sneaky backdoor to slash services and attack the jobs of postal workers.

It is also galling that senior Australia Post executives have been trying to hand themselves millions of dollars in bonuses in the middle of a recession and nationwide service cuts.

The impact of the cuts on affected suburbs will be to:

  • Reduce mail delivery frequency from daily, to two or three days a week;
  • Increase intrastate letter delivery timeframes to a minimum of seven full days, up from a previous minimum of three business days; and
  • Potentially also delay delivery of small to medium sized parcels and packets, as these products were carried by the postal workers whose delivery frequency is now being cut in half.

Labor will continue to fight for essential services and jobs, and we will hold Scott Morrison and his Government accountable for their ongoing attacks on the postal service.
