RECOGNISING SPORTING CHAMPIONS

19 September 2016

Sporting champions from across Rockingham and Kwinana on Friday were recognised for their hard work and commitment to sport at a presentation ceremony hosted by Madeleine King MP, the local Member of Federal Parliament.

Athletes representing a wide range of sports including archery, BMX, sailing and soccer, all received a $500 grant under the Local Sporting Champions program to assist them with the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms and equipment in their chosen event.

Ms King praised the dedication shown by the athletes telling them they would benefit from their sporting commitment for years to come.

“It is an honour to represent your club, state and country in sport,” Ms King said.

“It takes hard work and perseverance but at the same time you are building friendships that can last a lifetime and memories that are irreplaceable.”

Ms King encouraged all junior sportspeople in the community who were participating in state or national and international sporting championships to consider apply to the Local Sporting Champions program for a grant.

“The next round of applications are open until 30 October and guidelines and application forms are available at www.ausport.gov.au/champions,” Ms King said.

“This funding is a great help to families who support their children in their chosen sports.”
